The Defense Department has identified a 39-year-old soldier killed in a grenade attack in Iraq as a Mississippi man based at Fort Hood.
A Pentagon statement issued Monday says Staff Sgt. Johnny R. Polk of Gulfport, Miss., died July 25 at a U.S. military hospital in Germany of wounds suffered in the July 23 attack. According to the statement, Polk's vehicle was struck by an anti-tank grenade in Kirkuk, Iraq.
He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood.
