A south Texas man who fatally shot a person he believed was stealing palm trees from his family's nursery has pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Investigators say 26-year-old Graham Garfield fired two blasts from his shotgun into a car carrying three men as it drove away from his property in January 2009.
The gunfire killed 21-year-old Alejandro Estrada.
Garfield initially faced a murder charge. The McAllen Monitor reported Wednesday that Garfield reached an agreement with prosecutors on the lesser charge and received 10 years of probation.
The men Garfield shot at later admitted to investigators that they had intended to steal the trees.
Garfield, who was sentenced Monday, is a relative of late former U.S. Sen. Lloyd Bentsen.
