LAKE CHARLES, La. (May 10, 2010)--Everyone got off safely after a bus that was carrying Houston students home from a band competition caught fire, but the bus and the students’ belongings were destroyed, Louisiana State Police said.
Authorities said the bus fire at around 10:30 a.m. Sunday shut down the Interstate 210 bridge westbound at Lake Charles for about 4½ hours Sunday, State Police said.
The Pershing Middle School band members were returning from a competition in Orlando, Fla.
Authorities said the fire destroyed the bus, the students' belongings, the band's instruments and equipment and the band's first-place trophy.
State Police Sgt. James Anderson said the driver tried to make it across the bridge after a tire went flat, because construction limits the bridge to one lane on each side.
Anderson says the bus driver was not cited.
