The victims were hospitalized in the Austin area.
Police say the shooting happened early Monday in Burnet, Texas, about 40 miles northwest of Austin. The shooting victims were Denise Longoria, whose age was not provided, her 21-year-old son Hector Molina and an 8-year-old girl.
The shooting happened in the 200 block of S. Rhomberg early Monday morning at a home directly across the street from the Burnet Police Department .
Police have arrested Ishmael Rodriguez, 33, and said he walked up to the home with a 12-gauge shotgun and opened fire from the driveway.
Now, a front yard riddled with children's toys is a crime scene.
"We were sitting in the house watching TV when I heard a gunshot," said a neighbor who asked to remain anonymous. "I came out, I heard another one."
Rodriguez hit his aunt, Denise Longoria and her 21-year-old son in the arm and hit her daughter, Gabby Martinez, 7, in the face and stomach.
Police believe a verbal altercation between family members late Sunday night triggered the shooting.
All three victims were airlifted to Brackenridge Hospital .
"She had spray all over her body, different sections of her body," explained Burnet Police Chief Paul Nelson. "It is not just in one little area of her body, it is in her head, her chest, the stomach, the arms."
A crime neighbors said is so senseless, many were afraid to go on camera or identify themselves out of fear of retaliation.
"The strangest thing to me was that the man didn't run," the anonymous neighbor added. "He wasn't running away from the scene or anything. He just walked calmly away and that was scary because a man that does that is kind of fearless."
Family friends told KXAN the family is social, often holding gatherings on their front porch.
The little girl was crowned Miss Bluebonnet just weeks ago.
"Beautiful child," said Tanya Fraden, a family friend who stopped by the home after hearing the news. "Very intelligent. I fell in love with her."
Rodriguez is now in the Burnet County Jail and charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Neighbors and friends, however, don't feel these charges are adequate.
"I hope the person whoever is responsible for this is severely punished, has a long long time to think about it and I hope he is punished severely for what he has done to this precious family," Fraden said.
Gabby remains in the ICU and police said she has already undergone multiple surgeries to fix her nose and forehead.
Her mother and brother are expected to make a full recovery.
