AUSTIN- J. Allen Carnes knows that most of the people who elect Texas' agriculture commissioner know very little about farms or ranches.

That's why the third-generation vegetable farmer says they should vote for him, Carnes said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Carnes said if elected agriculture commissioner he would fight to protect agriculture in Texas, push for better schools and more doctors in rural areas and protect the interests of rural Texans.

He said he's not worried about whether support for the Farm Bill and expanded immigration put him at odds with tea party Republicans. He said the agriculture commissioner's job is to represent the industry to the rest of the state.

Carnes is facing Republican Party attorney Eric Opiela and Conroe Rep. Brandon Creighton in the Republican primary.
