Attorney General Eric Holder is appearing at a Houston high school to motivate students and offer encouragement.

Holder is joining other officials Monday afternoon at Wheatley High School just east of downtown Houston. The school serves an area of the city known as the Fifth Ward and its alumni include former congressional members Mickey Leland and Barbara Jordan.

A year ago, the school was the scene of protests after Houston Independent School District leaders removed an assistant principal and the principal resigned. The Houston Federation of Teachers also expressed concerns about safety and academic quality at the school.
