BEAUMONT, Texas - An electrician has pleaded guilty to tax fraud and will avoid retrial on allegations he overbilled a Southeast Texas school district.

A federal magistrate in Beaumont on Tuesday accepted the plea agreement from Calvin Gary Walker.

Walker pleaded guilty to failure to pay income taxes in 2009 on a Beaumont Independent School District check for nearly $1.6 million.

A jury last December deadlocked in a trial alleging the contractor submitted fraudulent invoices. Walker's retrial was set for next week, but prosecutors say remaining charges will be dismissed upon sentencing.

No sentencing date has been set for Walker, who faces up to a year in prison. He agreed to forfeit $3.2 million of annuities, from which the back taxes and any fine will be paid. BISD can also seek restitution.
