Mary Chavarria never has to wonder what she'll wear at the end of the week.

"One thing I know I'm going to have to put on Friday is my red shirt and I love it," said Chavarria.

Mary has a lot of red shirts but they're not all for her, they're for the town of Brenham.

"Our Mayor had declared every Friday, Red Shirt Friday since last year," said Chavarria.

Mary started the Red Shirt Friday craze as a way to support veterans in need. It's part of a nationwide effort and after a year, she's painting the town red.

"I didn't think I was going to sell five but I've sold 1200," said Chavarria.

"They're over there fighting for our freedom it's the least we can do is put on a red shirt to show our support," said Sherry Roland.

Roland works at Cuts Unlimited. The hair salon supports the cause and Roland has seen the shirts.

"Everywhere. You see it a lot in the restaurants and local businesses," said Roland.

"It's part of the uniform. It's required that our servers get the red shirts and wear them every Friday," said Applebee's manager Ashley Grange.

Even the Applebee's in Brenham is takes part in the Red Shirt Friday and they're not the only ones.

"It goes well with fire trucks. Red is one of our colors so it works well," said Brenham Fire Chief Ricky Boeker.

Yes, even the Brenham Fire Department has added more red to their wardrobe to show their support.

"You don't realize how many people are out there supporting it until you go out on a Friday and see all the red shirts out and about," said Boeker.

It all started with one shirt, Mary's, and she started it all for family.

"It is awesome! I have two nephews, one served a tour in Iraq and we have another one who is in the Marine's in Afghanistan," said an emotional Chavarria.

So Mary wears the red for them.

So far over $13,600 has been donated to the VFW post 7507 in Fountain Hills Arizona where the Red Shirt Friday campaign got started.

The shirts cost $11 with shipping and to see how you can order a shirt, we've got a link to the Brenham Red Shirt Friday below.
