KILLEEN, Texas (AP) - Authorities in Central Texas have identified an officer killed in a weekend exchange of gunfire as a four-year veteran of the police force and father of two young children.
Killeen police announced Monday that 32-year-old Robert Hornsby was killed after a police tactical team responded to an apartment complex on complaints of an armed man threatening people at a pool.
When officers arrived about midnight Saturday they found the suspect at his apartment holding an AK-47 assault rifle. When they attempted to take him into custody, the suspect backed into the apartment and began firing, striking Hornsby. Another officer was wounded.
Hornsby was the married father of a 4-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son.
The gunman, who police have not identified, was killed in the exchange.
