AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The Texas Democratic Party is condemning a fake immigrant hunt planned by the Young Conservatives of Texas on an Austin university campus.
The student club announced the "Catch an Illegal Immigrant Game" on Monday with a Facebook posting. Members plan to wear signs on Wednesday that say "illegal" and students who capture them get $25 gift certificates.
The group said in a statement they hope to spark debate on illegal immigration and a Texas law that allows children brought to the United States illegally to pay in-state tuition. Democrats condemned the game and pointed out that the organizer was a former staff member on Republican Greg Abbott's gubernatorial campaign.
The University of Texas at Austin said students who participate in the game Wednesday will be violating the student honor code.
