A Texas death row inmate awaits a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on whether his execution for killing a Houston police officer 14 years ago this week should be blocked.

Jeffrey Demond Williams is set for lethal injection Wednesday evening in Huntsville. The 37-year-old was condemned for gunning down Troy Blando, a 39-year-old officer working an auto theft surveillance detail on May 19, 1999.

Blando was trying to place handcuffs on Williams, who was driving a stolen car, when the officer was shot. Williams still was wearing the cuffs on one wrist when he was caught.

Williams' lawyers say the punishment should be delayed so courts can review further their arguments he had deficient legal help at his trial and during earlier stages of his appeals.
