Police were investigating Friday after a newborn infant was found dead inside a restroom of the Killeen Walmart Supercenter

Killeen police spokeswoman Carroll Smith said officers were sent at around 1:50 p.m. to the store at 1400 Lowe's Blvd. after an employee reported finding the newborn baby girl's body inside a restroom at the back of the store.

Bell County Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke pronounced the infant dead and ordered an autopsy.

It was not known if the infant was stillborn or how it may have died.

Officers were talking to the employee who found the child.

Police say they're looking for the mother because they fear she may need immediate medical attention and are hoping someone may come forward with more information.

"We would like to advise the mother to seek medical attention immediately or to contact the police department and we will assist her in seeking that medical attention she may need," the department said in a press release Friday evening.

The store remains open, but a spokeswoman said part of it was closed off while police investigated.

"At this point we are giving the investigators all the resources they need for their investigation,” said Wal-Mart corporate spokeswoman Ashley Hardie.

“At the moment that part of the store is still closed off and will remain closed for the investigation. Right now police are working with staff at the store on site to review security footage from the store for their investigation,” she said.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the mother or the incident to call Bell County Crime Stoppers at (254) 526-TIPS.
