HOUSTON -- Prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty against a Houston woman accused of killing a mother and abducting her newborn son.

The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office announced its decision in Verna McClain's case Thursday.

McClain's attorneys did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

No trial date has been set for the 31-year-old licensed vocational nurse, who has been indicted on a capital murder charge for the April 17 slaying in the Houston suburb of Spring. She remains jailed without bond.

McClain is accused of fatally shooting Kala Golden-Schuchardt outside a pediatric clinic and taking her days-old son. The baby was found safe with a relative of McClain.

Investigators say McClain had a miscarriage and was desperate to find a baby to pass off as her own.
