FARMERS BRANCH, Texas (AP) Leaders of a Dallas-area city will consider whether to appeal a ruling that struck down an ordinance banning immigrants in the U.S. without legal permission from renting apartments.

The Farmers Branch City Council meets Tuesday night.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on July 22 ruled the ordinance for the city of nearly 30,000 was unconstitutional and encroached on territory reserved to federal law enforcement.

The ordinance passed in 2008 would have required all renters to obtain city licenses and for a city official to deny licenses to anyone found in the U.S. illegally.

Farmers Branch is one of several U.S. cities targeting immigration by enacting renting restrictions. The legal battle has so far cost Farmers Branch almost $6 million.
