DENTON, Texas (AP) A North Texas woman has been sentenced to eight years in prison over a house fire that killed the 2-year-old son of a man she was dating.
The Dallas Morning News reported Tuesday that Toni Barnett of Frisco reached a plea deal in the 2010 fire that left 2-year-old Braylen Smalls dead.
Investigators have said Barnett and the boy's father, Christian Smalls, argued prior to the fire in Carrollton. Each blamed the other for setting the blaze.
A Denton County jury last November deadlocked in Barnett's trial.
Barnett last week pleaded guilty to manslaughter and received an eight-year prison term. She also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and was sentenced to two years. The terms will be served concurrently. Murder and arson charges were dropped.
