HOUSTON A Houston area restaurant has announced that patrons must be over eight-years-old after 7 p.m. to come dine.
La Fisheria, near Shepherd and I-10, posted the new rule on its front door and on its Facebook page.
Mexican reality TV star and executive chef Aquiles Chavez said the restaurant came to the decision over the weekend. The decision was made after a number of complaints from regular customers, according to Chavez.
Chavez called the decision a “tough” one but necessary to keep customers happy.
“We find children that are crying, some kids running under tables, and our customers don’t like,” Chavez said. “Seven o’clock is not a time for children, especially when we serve drinks and wine.”
La Fisheria is closed for business on Mondays. Tuesday will be its first day with the new rule in place.
Chavez said they have already been receiving a lot of positive feedback. He said those who are initially turned off by the rule have been understanding.
“When we explain, they say you’re right, at the end of the day, you’re thinking of us,” Chavez said.
Some restaurant enthusiasts feel that the rule will push families to eat elsewhere.
“If I had kids under nine, I definitely wouldn’t support them. I believe families should be able to eat together,” said Houston resident Bertran Bilton.
KHOU also came across no shortage of people who are applauding the restaurant.
“ We just went to three restaurants to have breakfast and left two because of too dang many kids,” said Houston resident Becky Pickens. “I think it’s cool.”
Chavez said his restaurant welcomes kids and even offers a separate menu. He believes restricting when kids can eat at La Fisheria will attract customers seeking a peaceful dining experience.
