Houston Woman Falsely Sought $7.4M Tax Refunds

HOUSTON (AP) A tax preparer in Texas who wrongly sought $7.4 million in refunds for the 2009 tax year has pleaded guilty to making a false claim against the government.

A federal judge in Houston on Wednesday accepted the plea from Alisa Grisson. She faces up to five years in prison and a possible $250,000 fine during sentencing next year.

Prosecutors say Grisson prepared phony tax returns for herself and others, then submitted the documents to the Internal Revenue Service. The government ended up with nearly $675,000 in tax losses. Grisson has agreed to make restitution for that amount and never aid or assist in preparing tax documents for anyone except herself.

Prosecutors did not immediately provide details on the falsified $7.4 million refund request.
