BEAUMONT, Texas - Two people died and more than 80 people were hurt Thursday when at least 140 vehicles collided in Southeast Texas in a pileup that left trucks twisted on top of each other.
The collision occurred in extremely foggy conditions at about 8:45 a.m. Thanksgiving Day on Interstate 10 southwest of Beaumont, a Gulf Coast city about 80 miles east of Houston.
A man and a woman were killed in a Chevy Suburban SUV crushed by a tractor trailer, the Texas Department of Public Safety tells KFDM-TV.
Jefferson County sheriff's Deputy Rod Carroll said in a news release that 80 to 90 people were transported to hospitals with 10 to 12 of those in serious to critical condition. He said 140 to 150 vehicles were involved in the pileup.
Carroll told The Associated Press the fog was so thick that deputies didn't immediately realize they were dealing with multiple accidents.

Two people are dead and dozens are injured after an estimated 140-vehicle pileup that forced the closure of Interstate 10 in Southeast Texas.
KFDM-TV reports that the collision happened around 8 a.m. Thursday on I-10 near Beaumont, about 80 miles east of Houston.
Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Stephanie Davis says two people in an SUV died after the crash, but declined to provide details. She says at least 100 cars and trucks crashed in extremely dense fog. Officials at Acadian Ambulance service tell KFDM that at least 51 people have been taken to area hospitals and that at least eight are critically hurt.
I-10 remains shutdown in eastbound lanes. Westbound lanes have reopened.

Injuries are reported and traffic is stopped on Interstate 10 in Southeast Texas after a massive traffic accident in thick fog.
KFDM-TV reports that dozens of cars appear to have collided at about 8 a.m. Thursday on I-10 southwest of Beaumont.
Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Deputy Rod Carroll reports that there are several injuries, but did not report any deaths. Carroll says the fog in the area is extremely dense.
I-10 has been shut down in both directions.
