FALFURRIAS, Texas - A funeral home paid to dispose of the remains of immigrants who died while crossing into the U.S. illegally has buried scores of bodies in mass graves in a South Texas cemetery.
The Corpus Christi Caller Times reports remains in trash bags, shopping bags, body bags, or no containers.
They've been buried since 2005 in the Sacred Heart Burial Park in Falfurrias.
Brooks County officials paid the local funeral home, Funeraria del Angel Howard-Williams, to handle the bodies after sheriff's officials recovered them.
The region can be deadly for immigrants who sneak into Texas, then walk through ranches amid sweltering temperatures to avoid a nearby U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint.
Volunteer researchers exhumed remains of 110 unidentified people from the cemetery in 2013, and did 52 more exhumations this summer.
