AUSTIN, Texas -- Lawmakers are considering several measures to protect workers from discrimination and wage theft.

In the House Committee on Economic & Small Business Development on Wednesday morning, Democratic Sen. Jose Rodriguez of El Paso proposed new legislation to penalize companies that "act in bad faith" by failing to pay their workers.

Houston Democratic Rep. Rep. Senfronia Thompson proposed increasing the amount of information the state gathers on wage discrimination complaints.

And Democratic Reps. Mike Villarreal of San Antonio and Eric Johnson of Dallas offered bills that would prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

Villarreal has made the same proposal without success in past legislative sessions. As he left the hearing, he expressed hope that "every session we advance the ball down the field."
