Lawmakers Hold Hearing on Property Taxes

Texas lawmakers will hold a hearing on property tax notices and sales taxes on data center equipment.

The House Ways and Means Committee will meet Thursday to study whether property tax notices adequately explain the taxes property owners must pay and who must pay them. Some have complained that the forms are too confusing or possibly misleading.

Lawmakers also want to hear opinions on the sales and use taxes imposed on equipment used in data centers.

The committee is in charge of taxation and ensuring that the system is fair, transparent and achieves the state's goals of promoting business and development.

The State Comptroller has reported higher than forecast tax collections since the 2011 Legislative session. Lawmakers are trying to figure out how to improve the system in 2013.
