DALLAS -- Cities across Texas are holding marches, parades and encouraging good works on the national holiday honoring slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
MLK organizers in Austin scheduled a program at King's statue on the University of Texas campus, to be followed by a march to the Texas Capitol. Participants are also encouraged to donate items to a food bank.
Thousands are expected to take part in an MLK march in San Antonio. Two parades in Houston will honor King's legacy.
NFL Hall of Famer Earl Campbell will serve as celebrity grand marshal for an MLK parade and festival in Dallas. Fort Worth is also holding an MLK holiday parade and rally.
Some Texas communities held weekend MLK events, including community service work projects and interfaith services.
