Marine from Texas Killed in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON - Military officials say a marine from Texas has been killed in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense announced Thursday that Sgt. Thomas Z. Spitzer, 23, of New Braunfels died Wednesday while conducting combat operations in Helmand province.

Spitzer was a mortarman assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, in Twentynine Palms, California. He died while on his second deployment to the region.

He had enlisted in the Marine Corps in August 2009.

Spitzer's commendations included being awarded the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Combat Action Ribbon and National Defense Service Medal.
