AUSTIN, Texas - A review of three years of gun-related deaths in Travis County shows that the number of people who end their lives with a firearm is three times larger than those who are killed in gun-related homicides.
The analysis done by the Austin American-Statesman (http://bit.ly/17gcGbw ) also shows that in more than a third of those suicides, drugs for mental illness - in some cases, substances linked to increased suicidal thoughts - were found either in the deceased's blood or at the scene of their deaths.
More than two dozen of those who committed suicide had been treated at psychiatric hospitals and 50 of them had documented histories of suicide attempts or thoughts.
Yet all of them had in one way or another, easy access to guns, the newspaper says.
