CELINA, Texas (AP) - More than 200 dogs in various stages of neglect have been seized from a rural North Texas property after being found in "appalling" conditions.

Denton County Sheriff Will Travis says in a statement that some of the dogs appeared to have been abused, while others are suffering various health problems. He further described the living conditions as "horrendous."

Sheriff's spokeswoman Sandi Brackeen says deputies discovered the animals after responding to a complaint call Thursday morning in Celina, about 40 miles north of Dallas.

Authorities say the property is run by Animal Guardians of America, a Plano-based group that identifies itself as a no-kill animal rescue organization. A call to Animal Guardians was not immediately returned.

The Humane Society of North Texas is assisting in finding shelter for the animals.
