Nearly Half of Texas Schools Fail Federal Standards

AUSTIN, Texas - Nearly half of Texas public and charter schools failed to meet federal accountability standards based on the No Child Left Behind Law.

That's a sharp increase that Texas education officials are blaming on passing standards that have gotten tougher.

The Texas Education Agency said Wednesday that 44.2 percent of schools statewide met "adequate yearly progress" standards compared to 47.8 percent, or 4,080 total schools across Texas that fell short of them.

When broken down by school district, the figures got even more bleak. Just 339 Texas public and charter school districts - or 27.6 percent - met AYP. Some 71.4 percent did not.

Those tallies were down dramatically from 66 percent of school campuses and 50 percent of districts overall in Texas that met AYP standards in 2011.
