PEARLAND, Texas (AP) A Houston-area police officer has shot and killed a theft suspect who tried to flee a hospital while being treated for injuries suffered during his arrest.
Pearland police say the officer who was guarding the suspect has been put on paid leave pending a review of Sunday night's shooting.
Authorities didn't immediately release the name of the man who was hospitalized for injuries sustained in a copper theft arrest earlier Sunday.
Officers say the suspect tried to run from Memorial Hermann Hospital Southeast in Houston and jumped into a retention pond. The Pearland officer also went into the water.
Houston police spokeswoman Jodi Silva says the suspect was getting out of the pond when he turned to the officer - who felt threatened and opened fire. The officer wasn't hurt.
