Austin-Bergstrom International Airport could be expanded to better handle the growing number of passengers.
The Austin American-Statesman reported Sunday that airport officials are riding a growth streak that could soon push passenger traffic to nearly 10 million annually.
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, with nonstop service to more than 40 U.S. and Mexico destinations, served more than 9.4 million passengers last year. Traffic through the first four months of 2013 was up 5 percent.
The Austin City Council on Aug. 8 is scheduled to consider a $62 million contract with Hensel Phelps Construction Co. to add 55,000 square feet to the terminal's east end. Hensel was the prime contractor when ABIA was built in the late 1990s.
