School Spending-Student Results Study

RICHARDSON, Texas (AP) - A new Texas education report that rates
school districts by comparing student performance to district
spending has only about 4 percent of schools getting the top
designation.

The report released Wednesday by Comptroller Susan Combs uses a
system in which schools get a ranking ranging from one to five
stars.

About 20 percent of districts followed with the next to best
ranking.

The 2009 Legislature had asked the comptroller's office to
develop a way to determine which schools were allocating their
funds in a way that lead to both academic achievement and cost
effectiveness. The report also gives schools recommendations on how
to trim spending.

Combs says public school spending, in the last decade, has
increased 63 percent.

She released the report during an appearance at the University
of Texas at Dallas.
