FORT BLISS, Texas (AP) - Fort Bliss officials say a soldier was injured seriously when an artillery shell exploded near him during a fire coordination training exercise.

The unidentified soldier is a member of the 1st Armored Division's 3rd Brigade. Maj. Joe Buccino, the Fort Bliss spokesman, says the soldier incurred shrapnel injuries to his torso and a leg and was immediately taken to William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso. Buccino says the soldier is in critical but stable condition.

The artillery round exploded near a group of soldiers training in preparation for their upcoming deployment to Afghanistan. No other soldiers were injured.

Exercises at the range where the accident happened have been suspended and the incident is under investigation.
