WESLACO, Texas (AP) Four top officials of a South Texas city and a former top official spent the afternoon in jail after they were charged with violating the state Open Meetings Act.

Four Weslaco city commissioners and a former commissioner turned themselves in Thursday afternoon to the Hidalgo County Jail in Edinburg. Mayor Pro Tem John Cuellar, commissioners David Fox, Jerry Tafolla and Lupe Rivera and ex-commissioner Joe Martinez were released on their own recognizance about two hours later.

Each could get up to six months in jail and up to $500 in fines if convicted.

The five are accused of meeting after the city election but before the newly elected allies of the commission minority were sworn in. The Monitor of McAllen reports a commission complained to District Attorney Rene Guerra.
