DALLAS (AP) A key confidante to former President George W. Bush will serve as president of his foundation.
Margaret Spellings has been named as president of the George W. Bush Foundation. The foundation said in a news release Thursday that Spellings will oversee management of his newly opened presidential library, his institute and an ongoing collaboration with the National Archives.
Spellings was secretary of education during Bush's second term, from 2005 to 2009. She previously served as a domestic policy advisor and is credited with helping to design Bush's signature No Child Left Behind education law.
Her history with Bush dates back to his 1994 campaign for Texas governor. She served as the campaign political director.
Her appointment is effective Sept. 3.
