BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) - A troubled Southeast Texas school district is being taken over by the Texas Education Agency.
Texas Commissioner of Education Michael Williams announced Monday he will appoint a board of managers to oversee the Beaumont Independent School District. Williams also announced he plans to name a new superintendent for the district.
The TEA said the Beaumont school district's accreditation status will be lowered to "accredited-probation."
Williams' decision comes after two recent TEA investigations that revealed problems with special education services provided to students with disabilities and a breakdown in the management of the district's finances.
Williams said the board of managers and the new superintendent will be appointed by June 15.
A spokeswoman for the district did not immediately return an email seeking comment Monday.
