Texas House Girds for Major Budget Vote Wednesday

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst says he is taking House leaders at their word, and that delicate pieces of a complicated Texas budget deal will be passed.

A big test comes today. That is when the House is expected to finally take up a new state water plan that is crucial to a spending compromise.

It comes a day after the House blew off a midnight vote deadline amid signs of distrust and frustration. House Democrats want assurance that a separate spending bill in the Senate's hands will include an extra $200 million for public schools.

Another major part of the budget is tax relief. Dewhurst says $1.5 billion in tax cuts and refunds were approved yesterday by the Senate, which must now negotiate final numbers with the House.
