AUSTIN Texas state Sen. Dan Patrick of Houston is joining a crowded Republican primary for lieutenant governor.
Patrick announced his statewide campaign at a downtown Austin hotel about two blocks from the Capitol. He joins a 2014 primary that already includes current Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson and Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples.
Patrick is a tea party favorite in the Senate. He called Tuesday night's failure to pass an abortion restriction bills an example of failed leadership by Dewhurst.
The bill died when several hundred protesters in the gallery disrupted the Senate's final minutes before a midnight deadline. That came Sen. Wendy Davis filibustered the bill for nearly 13 hours.
Gov. Rick Perry has called another special session to address the bill starting Monday.
