A survey by Texas' largest cattle group shows that 8 percent of ranchers won't be raising bovines next year in the nation's leading production state.

Results of the survey by the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association released Tuesday also showed that none of the 872 ranchers who responded said they're leaving the business for good.

Sixteen percent said they'd made no adjustment to their herd during the worst one-year drought in Texas history.

Eighty-four percent indicated they've cut their herd size from their three-year average.

The drought and blistering temperatures have burned pastures and grazing lands across Texas, forcing ranchers to severely cull their herds.

One association official said more animals could be culled if rains don't come in the next 45 days to recently planted wheat pastures.
