It was a chance to learn about the state of Texas' economy from the woman in charge of handling the state's public accounts.

The State of Texas Comptroller Susan Combs came to B/CS Wednesday morning to talk to members of the community about the future of the Texas economy.

Combs says the biggest thing that will affect Texans will be the growth in medicaid enrollment and the negative effect she says it will have on business owners.

According to Combs, the funds spent on Medicaid will take away from public education funds.

With the federal healthcare mandate, Medicaid spending in the state of Texas is expected to double from 20 percent of its total budget in 2011 to 37 percent of its total budget in 2023. The same amount that is spent on education.

"If you've got Medicaid squeezing out public education, if Medicaid squeezes out higher education, if Medicaid squeezes out everything else, that's actually a great concern for local communities," said Combs.

Combs says the growth in Medicaid will force employers to reduce employees or reduce health coverage.
