Tens of thousands of marijuana plants were collected in Polk County Thursday in what is being called the biggest pot bust in Texas history.
Approximately 30,000 plants were found in the rural area near FM 942 in Livingston, officials said.
Deputies said they waited months to ambush the property and Thursday’s harvesting required the help of nearly a dozen different agencies.
The marijuana bust involved at least eight fields worth of evidence, investigators said.
“We had the Texas Fire Service, they bulldozed roads for us so we could use our ATVs and our four-wheelers to get into the grow areas to get the plants out,” said Polk County
Sheriff Kenneth Hammack.
What they couldn’t access by land, they reached by helicopter. Local and federal resources came in to collect the plants and brought them back to the command center, where the evidence was loaded onto trailers.
“It’s becoming a common occurrence in east Texas (we’ve) been able to get those things eradicated before they can get sold out on the street,” said DEA Special Agent Chris Wells.
Authorities said they believe the operation is far too big an undertaking for just one person. They’re confident that whoever started it had help tending the crop, and they’re likely to issue multiple warrants as the investigation unfolds.
Deputies said they talked to the land owner, but no one was in custody Thursday night.
As for the street value of the bust, which included plants 8 and 9 feet tall, they said the bust was so big, they can’t even put an estimate on what it would sell for.
