DALLAS (AP) Travel groups have urged drivers to use caution as many schools across Texas prepare to resume classes next week.
AAA Texas on Wednesday reminded vehicle operators that more than one-fourth of child pedestrian fatalities happen between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. AAA reports nearly 13 percent of children heading to school typically walk or use their bicycles.
The Texas Department of Transportation's "Drive Friendly. Drive Safe." effort announced this week is meant to reduce crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists.
TxDOT says vehicles on Texas roads last year struck more than 5,000 pedestrians resulting in nearly 3,000 serious injuries and 481 fatalities. Vehicles also hit more than 2,000 bicyclists leading to 1,450 serious injuries and 56 fatalities.
Most Texas schools resume classes on Monday.
