The capital murder trial of a 23-year-old Waco man accused in the shooting deaths of two people has started, with family members of the victims and defendant scuffling in the courthouse hallway and again outside.
Ricky Cummings faces the death penalty or life in prison without parole if convicted of capital murder in the March 2011 shooting deaths of 17-year-old Tyus Sneed and 20-year-old Keenan Hubert. The two were sitting in the back seat of an apartment complex when multiple suspects opened fire.
Waco television station KWTX reports the trial started Monday morning with opening arguments, but proceedings were then recessed until early afternoon after the first witness did not show up.
Prosecutors say witnesses are fearful. Extra security was brought in for the trial.
