Waco Man Gets Prison for Police Chase, Assault

A Waco man who led police on a high-speed chase and threatened officers as they tried to serve a warrant on him last year was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

The Waco Tribune-Herald reports 37-year-old Joseph F. Labarbera was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty to two counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, aggravated assault, assault by occlusion and evading arrest with a vehicle.

The five-time convicted felon faced a minimum sentence of 25 years in prison because he was charged as a habitual criminal.

Fleeing authorities in June 2012, he was thrown from his motorcycle after crashing into a deputy U.S. Marshal's car and then threatened a Hewitt police officer with a knife.

Officials say the aggravated assault plea stems from an assault on his stepfather.
