A winter storm hitting the central Plains is leaving several inches of snow in much of West Texas and the Panhandle.
The National Weather Service forecast about 6 to 9 inches of snow Sunday night and Monday for Amarillo, with much higher totals for the northernmost part of the Panhandle. Strong wind gusts are expected through Monday night, creating whiteout conditions on roads.
The Texas Department of Transportation has closed Interstate 40 westbound from Amarillo to the New Mexico border. Spokesman Paul Braun warns of snow drifts approaching a foot or higher on some roads. He asks residents to stay inside unless absolutely necessary.
Texas Tech University and many local school districts have canceled classes.
