White Buffalo Cow, Calf Get New Home on the Range

A rare white buffalo cow that had been an attraction at a big Dallas gas station has been moved to a Fort Worth refuge, along with her newly born calf.

The cow and her calf will be added to a 40-year-old buffalo herd at the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge on Friday. Rob Denkhaus is the natural resources manager at the refuge, which has a 56-acre pasture. He tells the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that the cow had been in quarantine for about a month until she gave birth Sunday.

The owner of the gas station near downtown Dallas bought the already-pregnant buffalo in mid-February and displayed her in a fenced area at the station. The display drew criticism from American Indian groups that hold the white buffalo sacred.
