WACO, Texas - A 92-year-old Central Texas woman has received a certificate authorizing her to vote after initially being denied because she lacks photo identification and a birth certificate.
Bellmead resident Ruby Barber has no voter ID, which runs afoul of the 2013 state law requiring voters to show one of six photo IDs to cast a ballot at the polls. Barber tried to obtain an election identification certificate from the Texas Department of Public Safety but was denied for lack of a birth certificate.
The Waco Tribune-Herald reports she finally received authorization Tuesday when the state verified her citizenship by finding her birthday amid U.S. census rolls from the 1940s.
Those 65 and older can vote by mail without a photo ID but Barber wants to vote in person in November.
