Two former members of Texas A&M's Corps of Cadets are some of the latest casualties in the Iraq conflict.
Army First Lieutenant Timothy Cunningham and a fellow soldier died Wednesday in the town of Golden Hills in the central portion of the country. A Department of Defense press release says their deaths were a result of a vehicle incident.
Two days earlier, Marine First Lieutenant Matthew Vandegrift was killed during combat operations in Basrah in the northern portion of Iraq.
Cunningham, 26, was listed by the military as being from College Station, though his parents are from Alvin, where Cunningham attended high school. He was stationed at Fort Campbell Kentucky along with Private First Class John Bishop of Michigan, who died as well.
Cunningham attended Texas A&M beginning in the fall of 2000, but left a year-and-a-half later when he earned a spot at West Point according to The Association of Former Students.
The soldier leaves behind a wife, Samantha, and a daughter, Abigail. Funeral services are pending.
Vandegrift's family lived in Littleton, Colorado, but Matthew graduated from Leander High School near Austin. He earned a management degree from Texas A&M as part of the Class of '03, and also served in the Corps in Company H-1.
The 28-year-old was unmarried and based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He followed his father into the Marine Corps, and also leaves behind his mother and a brother who also serves in the military.
Vandegrift's funeral services will take place Sunday in Lakewood, Colorado. He will be buried Monday at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.
