Verzal Family Leaves Aggieland

A College Station couple who's toddler suffered injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome is leaving the Bryan/College Station community.

Brandon and Tiffany Verzal resigned Wednesday from the Texas A&M Athletics Department, where they worked for 12th Man Productions.

Their daughter, Alexis, suffered what investigators call non-accidental brain trauma at an in-home day care in April.

The one-year-old has completed her in-patient treatment at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska, and the family has relocated there so Alexis can continue her therapy.

"We didn't want to look back on things a year from now and say what if?" Tiffany Verzal said Wednesday by phone. "What if we would have stayed, what if we would have stayed with the same therapists? So we're going to lay it all on the line and hopefully she'll have the best recovery possible," Verzal said.

The pediatric day program will last between seven and nine months.

"The first nine months after an injury like this are vital to recovery, and we owe it to her (Alexis) to dedicate as much time as we can to getting her better," Verzal said.

The Verzals will start their own video production company in Nebraska, so they can work from home and care for Alexis.

They say the decision to leave College Station was difficult.

"The school and the community and the friends we made there are like family, and so it was a really hard decision to say that we are going to be in Nebraska, but we also know this is the best place for Alexis now," Verzal said.

The Verzal's friends and co-workers say the move isn't easy for them either.

"I hired Brandon and Tiffany because they were the best in the country at what they do, and they have built 12th Man Productions to what it is today," Jeff Schmahl, Senior Associate Athletic Director at Texas A&M said. "They're leaving it as a healthy organization, but we're going to miss them terribly."

The Brazos County District Attorney's office is still looking into the case. No charges have been filed.

Meanwhile, Texas A&M's soccer coach G. Guerrieri is planning a fundraiser for the Verzals in August. Click here for more information.
