Three billion dollars is a lot of money, and it's the hot topic for the Texas A&M System Board of Regents. It meets for two days starting Thursday, with votes to take place Friday.
The proposed budget of $3.04 billion for the entire system, with $1.14 billion of that slated to go to the College Station campus.
The totals for the main campus, Prairie View A&M ($158 million), the Health Science Center ($174 million) and the entire system are just slightly up from the previous fiscal year.
One of the items up for approval by the regents is more than $63 million for construction of the Medical Research and Education Building. That's part of Phase 1 of the construction of the campus, which is expected to take five years.
In closed session, regents will discuss contracts for three of the athletics department's biggest names. An adjustment to Director of Athletics Bill Byrne is on the agenda, as are amendments to the contracts of Women's Basketball Coach Gary Blair and Women's Soccer Coach G. Guerrieri.
As the investigation into the sinking of the Cynthia Woods continues, Safety Officer Roger Stone will be honored for giving his life to save members of the six-person boat team.
The surviving safety officer, Steven Conway, will also be thanked by the board, as will members of the Coast Guard team that saved the racing team.
