ELM GROVE, Wis. - The Texas A&M women’s tennis team opened its fall season by winning all seven singles matches and two of three doubles matches on the first day of the 33rd Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic, hosted by Marquette University and the Western Racquet Club.

“We had a good first day,” A&M coach Bobby Kleinecke said. “It’s only the first tournament, so we were just trying to get through first-match jitters. We didn’t play our best, but we played well enough to win. We are just trying to improve each day.”

The Aggies opened with doubles matches against Wisconsin in the morning. The A&M duo of Christi Liles and Elzé Potgieter recorded an 8-3 victory over Badgers Elizabeth Carpenter and Jessica Seyferth, and A&M’s Morgan Frank and Lauren Santacroce pulled out an 8-6 victory against Katya Mirnova and Aleksandra Markovic.

A&M freshmen Sheri Olivier and Ashley Turpin fought back after being down 5-2 to Wisconsin’s Angela Chupa and Alaina Trgovich, but their comeback came up short in an 8-7 (4) loss.

“Morgan and Lauren came through with a big doubles win,” Kleinecke said. “The match was even all the way, and they did a great job. Sheri and Ashley fought back to make it close it their match. That was key because it helped take the pressure off of Morgan and Lauren.

“We are playing without Stephanie Davidson, who is under the weather, and that was a key factor. If we had her, we would not have lost any of the doubles matches.”

In the afternoon matches, the Aggies swept Marquette in singles, winning six of the seven matches in straight sets. Santacroce completed the Aggies’ perfect day in singles by eking out a 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (11-9) victory against junior Elly Strother.

The Aggies continue the three-day tournament tomorrow, taking on Alabama in doubles at 9 a.m. and Wisconsin in singles at 3 p.m.

A post system will be used to determine the champions of the four-team tournament, which concludes on Sunday afternoon. Fall season results count toward only individual records and do not count as a team competition.
