As the 2008 football season heads into its final weeks, the time-honored tradition of football tailgating has found an MVP of its own as Tostitos brand names Hunter Shurtleff winner of its 2008 “Beat My Tailgate” Challenge. A resident of College Station, lawyer with the firm of Davis & Davis and a diehard Texas A&M fan, Shurtleff was selected America’s best football tailgater through online voting at www.tostitos.com and will receive a trip and ultimate tailgate for himself and seven guests in Glendale, AZ for the 38th annual Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on January 5, 2009.
Shurtleff, along with four other finalists, was selected from entries from across the country by Tostitos and Heisman trophy winner and former NFL star Eddie George. Shurtleff and his “Zone 416 Tailgate” – which is named after the section where his group sits at Kyle Field for Texas A&M home games – features everything from a 20-feet by 30-feet circus tent to flat-screen satellite TV to a huge maroon and white trailer BBQ grill for preparing game-day feasts.
The “Beat My Tailgate” competition kicked off in September when the Tostitos brand challenged tailgaters across the country to show off their tailgating expertise by submitting a short description and photo that captured what’s special about their tailgate traditions. A panel of judges, including Eddie George, selected five finalists who exemplified the most creative display of school or team pride, best theme of tailgating display and best presentation of ideas. From there, America voted online for its favorite tailgater, and Shurtleff took top honors.
"All of the 'Zone 416' tailgaters are excited about being chosen as the winner of the Tostitos Beat My Tailgate contest, and we are really looking forward to the Fiesta Bowl in January," said Shurtleff. "We have been tailgating at Texas A&M games for several years and it's just amazing to be recognized for something that we love to do every year."
