*10 P.M. Update*
Texas A&M University President R.Bowen Loftin is leaving Aggieland to become Chancellor of the University of Missouri.
A source close to President Loftin has confirmed he accepted the position.
Loftin was not seen at Wednesday night's Aggie Men's Basketball game after tweeting earlier in the day he'd be there and no one answered at his house Tuesday evening on campus.
The University of Missouri's website says they will announce their new chancellor at a press conference at 11 A.M. Thursday.
Loftin was named the 24th President of Texas A&M in February 2010 after serving as interim president.
Under his tenure he helped lead A&M's transition from the Big 12 to the Southeastern Conference as well as helped the flagship university swell to a record enrollment of 53,672 students.
In July Loftin announced he would be stepping down as president next month and would continue at the university in a teaching capacity.
News of his departure quickly spread and many students we talked to found out through social media.
"At first I was shocked, but then I thought about it and I'm glad for him because I know everyone here loves him a lot. And we wish he would've stayed but this is a better opportunity for him, so we're really happy for him. I think most people are," said Cameron Pipes, a Texas A&M Student.
At the University of Missouri the chancellor oversees the university while the president oversees the university system.
News 3 has confirmed through a source close to the president that Texas A&M University President R. Bowen Loftin has accepted the Chancellor opening at the University of Missouri.
We've learned that Loftin, who announced his retirement from A&M effective this coming January, has taken the position.
The University of Missouri's website is reporting that the university will announce a new Chancellor at a news conference tomorrow morning at 11.
